Borax (sodium tetraborate decahydrate) is a white, crystalline solid with no significant odor; it is non-volatile and decomposes before melting, typically above 320 °C. It is an inorganic boron-containing salt and a key source of boron in industrial chemistry. Borax serves as a critical intermediate in the production of boric acid, sodium perborate, and specialty borosilicate glasses, and is widely used in ceramic glazes, enamel frits, and flame-retardant formulations. Its principal application areas include glass and fiberglass manufacturing, detergents and cleaning agents, metallurgical fluxes, and as a component in certain adhesives and coatings.
A natural, colorless salt crystal found in some lake beds. Itis soluble in water and glycerin but not in alcohol. Whenmixed with water, it produces a slight alkaline reaction. Itsuse in photography was principally as a pH modifier ingold toning baths, but it was also used as a restrainer in pyrogallicacid developers and as an accelerator in hydroquinonedevelopers.
