It is an inorganic metal oxide and a basic compound formed from magnesium and oxygen. Magnesium oxide serves primarily as a refractory material, catalyst support, and precursor in the production of other magnesium compounds—including magnesium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate, and specialty ceramics. It is widely used in refractory linings for industrial furnaces, agricultural lime substitutes, dietary supplements, and as a component in electrical insulators, rubber accelerators, and wastewater treatment agents.
Magnesium oxide (MgO) is used as a lining for steel furnaces, as a component in ceramics,as food additives and pharmaceuticals, and to make strong window glass, fertilizers, paper,and rubber manufacturing.
