Phosphorous acid is a white, crystalline solid at room temperature, hygroscopic and highly soluble in water, with a melting point of approximately 73.6 °C and decomposition above 200 °C. It is an inorganic oxyacid of phosphorus, specifically a phosphonic acid (H₃PO₃), and exists predominantly as the tautomeric phosphonic acid form in solution. It serves primarily as a key intermediate in the synthesis of phosphonates and organophosphorus compounds, including flame retardants, scale inhibitors, and agricultural chelating agents. Its main industrial applications are in water treatment chemicals, metal surface treatment formulations, and as a precursor to glyphosate and other phosphonate-based agrochemicals.
Phosphorus acid is used to prepare phosphite salts. It is usually sold as a 20% aqueous solution.
