Sodium formate Market share- How big is the Sodium formate market?

China and Germany are the leading exporters of sodium formate, accounting for a substantial majority of global shipments, while the United States, India, and South Korea represent the largest importers. Sodium formate prices have remained relatively stable amid consistent cross-border flows, reflecting balanced supply-demand dynamics in key industrial markets. Exports from China have edged upward over the past two years, while German export volumes have held steady, and U.S. imports have increased modestly—indicating sustained demand in North American chemical processing and de-icing applications.

Sodium formate Market Analysis

Sodium Formate: Recent Market Intelligence Report

I. Price Trends
- **Latest Benchmark Price**: As of June 30, 2026, the Echemnet (Shengyishe) benchmark price for sodium formate stands at RMB 2,700.00 per metric ton, representing a 2.41% decline from the beginning-of-month price of RMB 2,766.67/ton. The current level remains within the upper-mid range for the year.
- **Price Range**: Recent market quotations show divergence: industrial-grade sodium formate trades between RMB 2,500–3,000/ton; high-purity grade (≥98%) is priced at RMB 2,600–3,200/ton; and electronic-grade (≥99.9%) commands premiums exceeding RMB 3,600/ton.
- **Regional Variation**: Prices in the East China region remain steady at RMB 2,800–3,000/ton; North China—where supply is relatively concentrated—sees slightly lower prices (RMB 2,600–2,800/ton); South China prices are comparatively higher due to elevated logistics costs.

II. Supply-Demand Fundamentals
- **Supply Side**:
- **Capacity Utilization**: Industry-wide capacity utilization in the first half of 2026 stood at approximately 71.5%. Nominal annual capacity has surpassed 1.15 million tons, yet effective supply is constrained to ~820,000 tons/year due to environmental regulatory constraints.
- **Capacity Withdrawal**: In Q1 2026, ~120,000 tons/year of outdated production capacity was decommissioned, primarily among enterprises failing to complete green technological upgrades.
- **New Capacity**: A new 100,000-ton/year facility in Huichang County, Jiangxi Province, is scheduled to commence operations by end-2026, primarily serving internal demand for oxalic acid and formic acid production within its parent group.
- **Demand Side**:
- **Traditional Applications**: Leather industry demand declined marginally by 1.5% year-on-year; however, penetration in premium automotive leather and eco-leather segments is rising. Demand from sodium hydrosulfite (insurance powder) production increased by 6.8% YoY, remaining the core domestic demand driver.
- **Emerging Applications**: Electronic-grade sodium formate demand reached 18,000 tons/year, surging 45% YoY; gross margins remained robust at 38%–42%, significantly outperforming industrial-grade products.

III. Cost & Profitability
- **Raw Material Costs**: Formic acid prices rose 2.1% MoM, while liquid caustic soda prices remained flat—strengthening cost-side support.
- **Production Costs**: Advanced facilities employing next-generation low-pressure carbonyl synthesis coupled with membrane separation and purification technology have reduced full production costs to RMB 2,850–3,050/ton—28%–32% lower than conventional processes. Combined with policy incentives (e.g., VAT immediate refund upon collection, carbon allowance trading), actual cash costs have fallen below RMB 2,600/ton.
- **Profit Margins**: Industrial-grade product gross margins stand at ~15%–20%; electronic-grade margins reach 38%–42%, underscoring pronounced premium pricing power for high-end products.

IV. Market Dynamics
- **Environmental Policy Impact**: Enterprises yet to complete green upgrades face additional environmental compliance and carbon fulfillment costs of RMB 180–220/ton—accelerating the exit of backward capacity via a widening cost gap.
- **Inventory Pressure**: Average producer inventory turnover days extended to ~18 days—up 3 days from the beginning of the year—as downstream buyers adopt cautious procurement strategies, predominantly placing small, just-in-time orders.
- **Regional Quotations**:
- **Hubei Province**: Wuhan Hengjiu Chemical’s 92% by-product sodium formate quoted at RMB 3,650/ton.
- **Shandong Province**: Lushi Chemical Group affiliates quote RMB 2,600–2,800/ton for standard grades, with select high-purity offerings reaching RMB 3,000/ton.
- **Henan Province**: Henan Kaijie Water Treatment’s 92% sodium formate quoted at RMB 2,500/ton; 99% grade quoted at RMB 3,200/ton.

Analysis & Outlook
1. **Near-Term Price Pressure**: Extended inventory turnover and conservative downstream procurement suggest continued weak, range-bound pricing in July. Industrial-grade prices may dip further into the RMB 2,600–2,700/ton range.
2. **Intensifying Structural Divergence**: Sustained growth in electronic-grade demand underpins resilient pricing, supported by cost fundamentals; conversely, oversupply in the industrial-grade segment intensifies competitive pricing pressure.
3. **Policy-Driven Industry Consolidation**: Tightening environmental and carbon policies will accelerate the exit of non-compliant producers, further elevating industry concentration—with CR5 projected to rise to 58.3%—enhancing pricing power for leading enterprises.

Forecasts
1. **Price Trend**: Industrial-grade sodium formate average price in H2 2026 is forecast to hold within RMB 2,650–2,800/ton; electronic-grade pricing is expected to remain above RMB 3,600/ton.
2. **Demand Structure Shift**: Demand share from emerging sectors—including new energy and biopharmaceuticals—is projected to increase from 3% to 5%, driving product evolution toward higher purity and functionalized specifications.
3. **Capacity Reallocation**: Leading enterprises will scale up investment in high-end capacity; electronic-grade sodium formate’s share of total capacity is expected to exceed 15% by 2027, while traditional capacity share gradually contracts to below 60%.

About Sodium formate

Sodium formate is a white, crystalline, hygroscopic solid with no significant odor and moderate water solubility. It is the sodium salt of formic acid and is classified as an organic chemical intermediate. With a melting point of approximately 253 °C (decomposes), it is non-volatile under ambient conditions and thermally stable up to its decomposition temperature. Sodium formate serves primarily as a precursor in the production of formic acid, oxalic acid, and sodium hydrosulfite, and is used in leather tanning, drilling fluid additives, and as a de-icing agent. Its main application areas include agrochemical synthesis, pharmaceutical intermediates, and as a reducing agent in dye manufacturing.

1. Sodium formate is mainly for the production of formic acid, oxalic acid and insurance powder and so on.2. It is used as the reagent for the determination of phosphorus and arsenic, disinfectant and mordant.3. It is used as preservatives, with diuretic effect. It is mutatis mutandis in EEC countries, but the British are not allowed to use.4. Sodium formate is used as intermediates in the production of formic acid and oxalic acid, but also for the production of dimethyl formamide, also used in medicine, printing and dyeing industry. It is also heavy metal precipitant.5. It is used as alkyd paints, plasticizers, high explosives, acid-resistant materials, aviation lubricants, additives of adhesives.6. It is used for precipitating noble metal, may form trivalent metal complex ions in the solution. With buffer effect, it can be used for correcting pH value of strong mineral acids to be higher. It is precipitant of heavy metal.
It is a white powder, with water absorption and a slight odor of formic acid. It is dissolved in water and glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol and insoluble in ether.
