Quartz

Quartz is a naturally occurring crystalline form of silicon dioxide (SiO₂), appearing as transparent to translucent, hard, brittle, and lustrous solid crystals—commonly colorless, white, or tinted by impurities. It is chemically inert, non-volatile, odorless, and exhibits a high melting point of approximately 1650 °C (with polymorphic transitions below this temperature). Quartz is classified as an inorganic oxide mineral and is not used as a chemical intermediate in synthesis. Its primary industrial applications stem from its piezoelectric, optical, and thermal stability properties, making it essential in frequency-control devices (e.g., oscillators and resonators), precision instrumentation, semiconductor manufacturing, and high-purity laboratory ware. It is also employed in optical components, UV-transmitting windows, and as a raw material for fused silica production.
