Calcium formate is a white, crystalline, odorless solid that is non-volatile and moderately soluble in water; it decomposes before melting, with decomposition beginning around 250 °C. It is classified as a metal salt of an organic acid (specifically, the calcium salt of formic acid). Industrially, it serves primarily as a catalyst and accelerator in the production of formaldehyde-based resins and as a setting accelerator in cement and concrete formulations. It is also used as a feed additive in animal nutrition and as a de-icing agent for airport runways and roads. Its applications span construction chemicals, animal health, and specialty chemical synthesis—particularly where controlled release of formate ions or calcium supplementation is required.

Preservative for food, silage; as binder for fine-ore briquets; in drilling fluids and lubricants.Calcium formate is an organic salt suitable for use in pig and poultry diets. It acts as a feedstock preservative and has an acidifying effect on the gastro-intestinal tract, which promotes good gut-health.
