Cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) is a colorless, moderately volatile liquid with a mild, ethereal odor. It is a cyclic aliphatic ether, characterized by a boiling point of approximately 106 °C and low water solubility. CPME is widely employed as a green solvent replacement for traditional ethers (e.g., THF, dioxolane) and chlorinated solvents due to its high stability toward strong bases, nucleophiles, and oxidizing agents, as well as its favorable environmental and toxicological profile. Its primary applications are in pharmaceutical and fine chemical synthesis—particularly in reactions requiring anhydrous, non-coordinating, and thermally stable media—such as Grignard reactions, hydride reductions, and metal-catalyzed cross-couplings. It is also used in the production of agrochemical intermediates and specialty polymers.

Cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) is an alternative to ether solvents such as THF, diethyl ether, and MTBE with a higher resistance to peroxide formation.
