Ethanethiol is a colorless, volatile liquid with a strong, unpleasant odor often described as resembling skunk spray or rotten cabbage. It is a low-molecular-weight aliphatic thiol, boiling at 35 °C and melting at −148 °C. As an organosulfur compound and chemical intermediate, it is primarily used in the synthesis of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and flavoring agents. Its main industrial applications include serving as a precursor to sulfoxides and sulfones, and as an odorant added to natural gas and propane for leak detection. It is also employed in the production of rubber accelerators and certain specialty chemicals for agrochemical and polymer formulations.
