tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a faint, characteristic odor; it is thermally unstable above ~100 °C and decomposes exothermically. It is an organic peroxide and a tertiary alkyl hydroperoxide, commonly handled as a solution in water or non-reactive solvents (e.g., decane) for stability. TBHP serves primarily as an initiator and oxidizing agent in free-radical reactions, especially in polymerization processes for elastomers, plastics, and resins. Its principal industrial applications include the production of propylene oxide via the hydroperoxide process and as a key intermediate in synthesizing tert-butanol, alcohols, epoxides, and specialty chemicals used in agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and polymer additives.
It is used to initiate polymerization reactionsand in organic syntheses to introduce peroxygroups into the molecule.
