Lithium bromide

Lithium bromide is a white, crystalline, hygroscopic solid at room temperature with no discernible odor; it has a high melting point of approximately 552 °C and decomposes before boiling. It is an inorganic ionic salt composed of lithium cations and bromide anions. Lithium bromide is primarily used as an absorbent in absorption refrigeration and air-conditioning systems due to its strong affinity for water vapor. It also serves as a catalyst or reagent in certain organic synthesis reactions, particularly in halogen exchange processes and as a source of bromide ions in pharmaceutical and fine chemical manufacturing. Its principal application areas include HVAC equipment, specialty chemical synthesis, and select battery-related research and development.

Lithium bromide is used in absorption, refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. A highly concentrated solution of the salt is an efficient absorbent of water vapor. The vapor pressure of such solution is very low. Other applications include the use of the salt as a swelling agent for wool, hair and other organic fibers; as a catalyst in dehydrohalogenation reactions; and as a sedative and hypnotic in medicine.
