Sulfurous Acid

Sulfurous acid is an unstable, colorless liquid that exists only in aqueous solution and decomposes readily to sulfur dioxide and water; it has a sharp, pungent odor characteristic of SO₂. It is an inorganic oxyacid of sulfur, classified as a weak, diprotic acid. Industrially, sulfurous acid serves primarily as a transient intermediate in the production of sulfites, bisulfites, and other sulfur-containing compounds used in water treatment, food preservation (e.g., as antimicrobial agents), and pulp and paper manufacturing. Its derivatives are employed in flue gas desulfurization, textile bleaching, and as reducing agents in chemical synthesis.

As a bleaching agent, sulfurous acid is used for whitening wool, silk, feathers, sponge, straw, wood, and other natural products. In some areas, its use is permitted for bleaching and preserving dried fruits. The salts of sulfurous acid are sulfites.
