Tin(II) fluoride is a white to off-white crystalline solid, odorless and non-volatile, with a melting point of approximately 213 °C (decomposes before boiling). It is an inorganic metal fluoride and a source of bioavailable Sn²⁺ ions. Primarily used as an active ingredient in dental care products—including toothpastes and mouth rinses—for its proven anti-cariogenic (cavity-preventing) activity, it functions by promoting enamel remineralization and inhibiting bacterial metabolism. It also serves as a specialty reagent in selective fluorination reactions and as a catalyst or dopant in certain ceramic and electronic material syntheses. Its applications are largely confined to oral hygiene formulations and niche materials science contexts.
