It is an inorganic chlorosulfonating agent and reactive sulfur-containing compound. Industrially, it serves primarily as a chlorinating and sulfonating reagent in organic synthesis, especially for converting alcohols to alkyl chlorides and carboxylic acids to acyl chlorides. Its principal applications are in the production of agrochemicals (e.g., herbicides and insecticides), pharmaceuticals (e.g., active pharmaceutical ingredients and intermediates), and dyes. It is also used in the synthesis of specialty polymers and functionalized aromatic compounds.
Sulfuryl chloride is used as a chlorinating and sulfonating agent in organic synthesis. It also is used in military gas.
