Methacrylic acid is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a sharp, acrid odor and moderate volatility; it has a melting point of 16 °C and a boiling point of 161 °C. It is an unsaturated carboxylic acid and a key organic chemical intermediate. Primarily used in the synthesis of methacrylate esters—especially methyl methacrylate—it serves as a fundamental monomer for acrylic polymers and copolymers. Its principal applications are in high-performance coatings, adhesives, sealants, and impact-resistant plastics such as poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). It is also employed in specialty polymer formulations for medical devices, optical materials, and construction additives.
