Cumene hydroperoxide is a colorless to pale yellow liquid at room temperature, with a faint, characteristic odor and moderate volatility; it decomposes before boiling and has a melting point of approximately −30 °C. It is classified as an organic peroxide and serves primarily as a reactive chemical intermediate in industrial synthesis. Its principal use is in the production of phenol and acetone via the Hock process, where it undergoes acid-catalyzed cleavage. It is also employed as a free-radical initiator in polymerization reactions for unsaturated polyester resins and acrylic monomers. Typical application areas include polymers, coatings, and specialty resins—particularly in fiberglass-reinforced plastics and gel coats.
