Castor oil Market share- How big is the Castor oil market?

India is the dominant global exporter of castor oil, accounting for over 80% of total international exports, while the United States, Germany, and the Netherlands serve as the largest importers. Castor oil prices have remained relatively stable amid consistent demand from pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and industrial sectors. Export volumes from India have held steady since 2022, with minor growth in shipments to the EU and Southeast Asia, reflecting sustained global reliance on Indian supply.

About Castor oil

Castor oil is a viscous, pale yellow to light amber liquid at room temperature, with a mild, characteristic odor and negligible volatility; it has a freezing point of approximately −12 °C and decomposes before boiling. It is a natural triglyceride classified as a vegetable oil, primarily composed of ricinoleic acid (≈90%), a monounsaturated, hydroxylated fatty acid. As a key biobased feedstock, it serves as a critical intermediate in the synthesis of sebacic acid, undecylenic acid, 11-aminoundecanoic acid, and various esters and polyols. Its derivatives are widely employed in the production of lubricants, nylon-11, polyurethane coatings, plasticizers, and surfactants, with major application areas spanning polymers, coatings, personal care products, and industrial lubrication.

Dehydrated castor oil is an unique drying oil, which imparts good flexibility, fine gloss, toughness, adhesion, chemical and water resistance to the dry paint film with non-yellowing properties. DCO is a very suitable and even better substitute for Linseed oil. Paints with DCO are super white and offer superior finish.Dehydrated castor oil is used as a primary binder for house paints, enamels, caulks, sealants and inks. In “cooked” varnishes it is combined with all the basic resins, rosins, rosin-esters, hydrocarbons and phenolics to produce clear varnishes and vehicles for pigmented coatings. DCO is also used in the manufacturing of lithographic inks, linoleum, putty and phenolic resins.DCO is used with phenolics to obtain fast drying coatings with maximum alkali resistance as required in sanitary can lining, corrosion resistant coatings, traffic paints, varnishes, ink vehicles, wire enamels, aluminium paint appliance finishes and marine finishes.DCO is also used to obtain fast kettling rate which gives lighter colour and lower acid varnishes.
