Itaconic acid is a white crystalline solid at room temperature, odorless, with a melting point of approximately 165–170 °C and low volatility. It is an unsaturated dicarboxylic organic acid and classified as a bio-based platform chemical. Industrially, it serves primarily as a reactive comonomer in free-radical polymerizations, especially in the production of synthetic latexes, superabsorbent polymers, and thermosetting resins. Its main application areas include coatings, adhesives, textiles, and ion-exchange resins; it is also used as a building block in the synthesis of specialty esters, plasticizers, and agricultural adjuvants.
