Le carbonate de baryum est une poudre cristalline blanche, inodore et non volatile qui se décompose au-dessus de 1300 °C sans présenter de point d’ébullition distinct. Il s’agit d’un sel inorganique et du principal composé commercial du baryum. Le carbonate de baryum sert principalement de précurseur à la production d’autres composés du baryum — notamment l’oxyde de baryum, le chlorure de baryum et des sels spécialisés du baryum — et est largement utilisé dans la fabrication de céramiques, de verre et de composants électroniques tels que les matériaux diélectriques pour condensateurs. Il entre également dans la formulation des appâts antirats et sert de fondant dans les procédés métallurgiques. Ses applications sont concentrées dans les secteurs de la céramique, de l’électronique, de la verrerie et de certaines formulations agrochimiques.
