O carbonato de potássio (CAS 584-08-7) é um sal inorgânico branco, inodoro, higroscópico, geralmente encontrado na forma de pó cristalino ou granulado, com ponto de fusão elevado (aproximadamente 891 °C) e solubilidade significativa em água. Classificado quimicamente como um carbonato alcalino, atua como uma base forte não volátil e estável termicamente, sendo amplamente empregado como agente de neutralização, catalisador e tampão em processos industriais. É um intermediário essencial na síntese de compostos orgânicos, incluindo fármacos, corantes reativos, agrotóxicos e aditivos para lubrificantes, além de desempenhar papel crítico na produção de vidros especiais, cerâmicas e eletrólitos para baterias.
