1-Octene is a clear, colorless, volatile liquid with a mild, gasoline-like odor. It is an alpha-olefin (linear terminal alkene) with a boiling point of approximately 121 °C and a melting point of −102 °C. As a key C8 olefin intermediate, it is primarily used in the production of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) via copolymerization with ethylene. It also serves as a precursor in the synthesis of plasticizers (e.g., via hydroformylation to C9 aldehydes), synthetic lubricants, surfactants, and organometallic catalysts. Its principal application areas include polymer manufacturing, specialty chemicals, and performance fluids.
