Methyl valeraldehyde (CAS 123-15-9) is a colorless to pale yellow, volatile liquid with a pungent, fruity odor. It is an aliphatic aldehyde, specifically a branched-chain C₆ aldehyde (2-methylpentanal), and has a boiling point of approximately 123–125 °C. As a reactive organic intermediate, it is primarily employed in chemical synthesis for the production of specialty esters, plasticizers, and flavor/fragrance compounds. Its principal applications are in the fragrance and flavor industry—where it serves as a precursor to hydroxycitronellal and other aroma chemicals—and in the manufacture of agrochemical intermediates and functional polymers.
