Global Cobalt(II) oxide trade volumes have remained relatively stable since 2022, though regional shifts in sourcing—particularly increased imports by European Union countries amid supply chain diversification efforts—coincide with elevated and volatile Cobalt(II) oxide prices.
Cobalt(II) oxide (CoO) is a black to grayish-black crystalline solid, odorless and non-volatile, with a high melting point of approximately 1,935 °C. It is an inorganic metal oxide and a stoichiometric cobalt(II) compound. Primarily used as a precursor or intermediate in the production of cobalt-containing materials, it serves in the synthesis of cobalt salts, catalysts, and specialty ceramics. Its principal applications include pigment manufacturing for glasses, glazes, and enamels; battery cathode material production (e.g., lithium Cobalt(II) oxide); and as a catalyst or promoter in oxidation reactions and hydrodesulfurization processes.
Cobalt(II) oxide is used as a pigment for ceramics and paints; for drying paints, varnishes and oils; for coloring glass; as a catalyst; and for preparation of other cobalt salts. The commercial product is a mixture of cobalt oxides.
