Sodium sulfide is a yellow-to-red crystalline solid, typically supplied as hydrated flakes or pellets (commonly the nonahydrate, Na₂S·9H₂O), with a characteristic odor of hydrogen sulfide. It is an inorganic ionic compound, highly soluble in water and hygroscopic, decomposing above 118 °C (nonahydrate) with release of H₂S. Sodium sulfide serves primarily as a sulfurizing agent and reducing agent in industrial chemical synthesis. It is widely used in the production of sulfur dyes, leather tanning agents, and inorganic sulfides; key application areas include dyes and pigments, pulp and paper manufacturing (as a delignifying agent), and water treatment chemicals.
