About cryolite

Cryolite (Na₃AlF₆) is a white to colorless, crystalline solid with no discernible odor; it is non-volatile and has a high melting point of approximately 1012 °C. It is an inorganic fluorinated salt, specifically a sodium aluminum fluoride, and occurs naturally as the mineral cryolite or is produced synthetically. Its principal industrial use is as a flux in the Hall–Héroult process for aluminum electrolysis, where it lowers the melting point of alumina and enhances electrical conductivity of the molten bath. Cryolite is also employed in the production of aluminum-based alloys, in enamel and glass frit formulations, and as an opacifier in ceramic glazes. It finds application in metallurgy, specialty glasses, and certain abrasive products.
