Fluorosilicic acid is a colorless to pale yellow, fuming liquid with a pungent, acrid odor; it is highly soluble in water and typically handled as an aqueous solution (commonly 20–35% w/w). It is an inorganic acid and the hydrated form of silicon tetrafluoride, classified as a fluorinated mineral acid. Its principal industrial use is as a precursor to aluminum fluoride and synthetic cryolite in aluminum smelting, and it serves as a key source of fluorine in the production of fluorinated chemicals, including fluorosilicates used in water fluoridation and cement hardening agents. It is also employed in the manufacture of fluorochemicals for catalysts, ceramics, and glass etching applications.
A 1-2% solution is used widely for sterilizing equipment in brewing and bottling establishments. Other concentrations are used in the electrolytic refining of lead, in electroplating, for hardening cement, crumbling lime or brick work, for the removal of lime from hides during the tanning process, to remove molds, as preservative for timber.
