Isooctanol (2-ethylhexanol) is a colorless, slightly viscous liquid with a mild, characteristic odor and moderate volatility; it has a boiling point of approximately 184–185 °C and a melting point near −70 °C. It is classified as a branched-chain aliphatic alcohol and is widely used as a chemical intermediate in industrial synthesis. Its primary application is in the production of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and other plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products. It is also employed in the manufacture of lubricant additives, surfactants, emulsifiers, and coatings. Typical end-use sectors include plastics, automotive, construction, and personal care formulations.
