Sulfamic acid is a white, crystalline, odorless solid that is non-volatile and highly soluble in water; it decomposes before melting, typically above 200 °C. It is an inorganic Brønsted acid (aminosulfonic acid), distinct from organic carboxylic or mineral acids due to its thermal stability and controlled acidity. It is widely used as a descaling and cleaning agent in industrial water treatment, metal finishing, and dairy equipment sanitation, owing to its effectiveness against carbonate and oxide deposits without corroding stainless steel or copper alloys. As a chemical intermediate, it serves in the synthesis of sulfamate esters, flame retardants (e.g., melamine sulfamate), and pharmaceuticals, particularly in the production of saccharin and certain sulfa drugs. Its applications span water treatment chemicals, agrochemical formulations, electroplating additives, and specialty polymer modifiers.
