Triclopyr is a white to off-white crystalline solid at room temperature, with a faint, chlorinated odor and low volatility; it has a melting point of approximately 113–115 °C and is sparingly soluble in water. It is a chlorinated aromatic ether and classified as a synthetic auxin-type organic acid herbicide. Triclopyr is primarily manufactured and used as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) precursor and as a key intermediate in the synthesis of more complex agrochemicals, particularly selective broadleaf herbicides. Its principal application area is in agrochemical formulations for forestry, pasture, and non-crop land management, where it functions as the active ingredient in ester and amine salt formulations.
