Acetamide

Acetamide is a white, crystalline solid at room temperature with a faint, characteristic odor and moderate hygroscopicity. It is an organic amide compound, specifically the simplest amide derivative of acetic acid, with a melting point of 82 °C and a boiling point of 221 °C. Acetamide serves primarily as a chemical intermediate in organic synthesis, particularly in the production of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and dyes. It is also employed as a solvent and stabilizer in polymer processing and as a precursor to compounds such as acetohydroxamic acid and N-methylacetamide. Typical application areas include pharmaceutical manufacturing, pesticide formulation, and specialty chemical synthesis.

Acetamide is used primarily as a solvent, a plasticiser, and a wetting and penetrating agent. Workplace exposures to acetamide are associated with the plastic and chemical industries.
