Diatomite Market share- How big is the Diatomite market?

In recent years, the United States, Denmark, and Japan have been the leading exporters of diatomite, collectively accounting for a substantial share of global supply, while China, the United States, and Germany ranked among the top importers—reflecting both domestic consumption and re-export activity. Diatomite prices have remained relatively stable amid moderate demand growth across filtration, construction, and agricultural end uses. Export volumes from Denmark and Japan have shown consistent growth since 2022, while U.S. trade flows—both exports and imports—have remained dominant and largely stable.

- Yunnan: Low-grade diatomaceous earth, quoted at RMB 165.00 per metric ton on July 2.

3. Price Fluctuation Analysis
- Diatomaceous earth prices are significantly influenced by multiple factors including grade, region, supply-demand dynamics, and transportation costs—resulting in substantial price variation. High-grade products generally command higher prices than low-grade ones; food-grade diatomaceous earth is notably more expensive than industrial-grade material.
- Overall, diatomaceous earth prices have remained stable recently, with the Business Network benchmark price unchanged from the start of the month; however, notable price disparities exist across regions and product specifications.

II. Market Supply-Demand Analysis

1. Supply Situation
- Diatomaceous earth resources are primarily concentrated in Jilin, Yunnan, and Sichuan provinces, with Jilin Province being China’s largest producing region—accounting for over 40% of the nation’s total reserves.
- Numerous enterprises engage in diatomaceous earth mining and processing; however, only a limited number possess large-scale production capabilities. Key industry players include Jilin Yuantong Mining Co., Ltd. and Yunnan Tengchong Diatomaceous Earth Development Co., Ltd.

2. Demand Situation
- Owing to its porous structure, high adsorption capacity, and chemical stability, diatomaceous earth finds broad application in water treatment, food filtration, coatings, construction materials, environmental protection, and other sectors.
- Increasingly stringent environmental regulations and continuous advancements in industrial technology continue expanding diatomaceous earth application scenarios, driving sustained growth in market demand—especially in water treatment and environmental protection, where demand for high-efficiency filtration media has surged markedly.

III. Market Trend Outlook

1. Price Trend
- In the short term, diatomaceous earth prices are expected to remain stable; however, regional and specification-specific price fluctuations may occur due to evolving supply-demand dynamics.
- Over the longer term, continued implementation of environmental policies and continual expansion of application fields are likely to sustain demand growth, potentially driving diatomaceous earth prices upward gradually.

2. Supply-Demand Trend
- On the supply side, further mineral resource development and technological progress are expected to boost diatomaceous earth output. However, increasingly strict environmental regulations may impose higher compliance requirements on mining and processing enterprises, thereby constraining the production capacity of some firms.
- On the demand side, rising environmental awareness and the development of green economy will intensify demand for high-quality, high-purity diatomaceous earth products—particularly in water treatment, air purification, and food additives—where market demand is projected to grow continuously.

3. Industry Development Trends
- Technological innovation will serve as a key driver for the diatomaceous earth industry. Developing advanced processing technologies—such as nanoscale diatomaceous earth preparation and composite material R&D—to enhance product value-added will further strengthen market competitiveness.
- Environmental protection and sustainable development are emerging as new industry imperatives. With the rise of the green economy and growing demand for eco-friendly products, enterprises are expected to increase investment in environmentally sustainable offerings—propelling the diatomaceous earth industry toward high-end, refined, and specialized development.

About Diatomite

Diatomite (CAS 61790-53-2) is a naturally occurring, porous, amorphous silica-based sedimentary rock composed primarily of fossilized diatom frustules; it typically appears as a fine, lightweight, off-white to light gray powder with no odor and negligible volatility. Chemically, it is classified as a hydrated amorphous form of silicon dioxide (SiO₂·nH₂O), not an organic compound or synthetic intermediate. It is widely used as a functional filler, filter aid, and mild abrasive across industrial applications—notably in filtration systems for beverages, pharmaceuticals, and wastewater treatment, as well as in paints, coatings, plastics, and agricultural formulations. Its high porosity, low density, and inertness make it suitable for performance-enhancing roles in polymer composites, catalyst supports, and animal feed additives.

Chemically, diatomaceous earth is mostly amorphous silicon dioxide, accompanied by mineral salts, with large surface area. Its use as an insecticide dust is based on its capability toabsorb moisture, oils, and waxes (48).
