Barbituric Acid

Barbituric acid is a white, crystalline solid with no significant odor and low volatility; it decomposes before boiling and has a melting point of approximately 249–252 °C. It is an organic heterocyclic compound—specifically, a pyrimidine derivative—and serves primarily as a key synthetic intermediate in organic chemistry. Its principal industrial use is in the production of barbiturate pharmaceuticals, although such applications have declined significantly; it remains relevant in research and specialty chemical synthesis for derivatives with applications in analytical reagents and functional materials. Typical downstream application areas include pharmaceutical intermediates and, to a lesser extent, dyes and polymer additives where its tautomeric structure enables condensation reactions.

It is used for intermediate of organic synthesis raw materials, pharmaceuticals, plastics and dyes. It Is the intermediate of phenobarbital, vitamin B12 and other drugs,it is also used as a polymerization catalyst and the preparation of benzimidazolone-based organic pigments. Also it is used as colorimetric determination of uronic and pentosan reagents.
White crystalline powder. Odorless. Soluble in water and ether, insoluble in water and alcohol.
