Sodium thiosulfate is a white, crystalline, odorless solid that is highly soluble in water and non-volatile; it decomposes before melting, typically above 100 °C. It is an inorganic salt composed of sodium cations and the thiosulfate anion (S₂O₃²⁻). Sodium thiosulfate serves primarily as a reducing agent, complexing agent, and source of sulfide or thiosulfate ions in industrial processes. Its principal applications include photographic fixing (removing unexposed silver halides), gold leaching in metallurgy, dechlorination of water and wastewater, and as a stabilizer or intermediate in the synthesis of certain pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. It is also used in the textile industry for bleaching and dyeing processes.

Used as chelating agents, antioxidants, anti-browning agent, as the dechlorination agent of chlortetracycline hydrochloride (or chlortetracycline) chilled with ice, dechlorination reaction is as follows:More chlorine content will cause side reactions of free sulfur, so only used for very dilute concentrations of chlorine.Used as salt chelating agent, limited content is 0.1% or less.
