Aluminum fluoride is a white, crystalline, odorless solid that is non-volatile and thermally stable, with a high melting point of approximately 1,040 °C. It is an inorganic ionic compound and a key fluorinating agent in metallurgical and chemical processes. Its principal industrial use is as a flux additive in aluminum electrolytic production, where it lowers the melting point and improves conductivity of cryolite-based electrolytes. It also serves as a catalyst or precursor in the synthesis of fluorinated compounds and specialty ceramics. Typical application areas include primary aluminum smelting, refractory materials, and optical coating formulations.
