Calcium bromide is a white to off-white, hygroscopic crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water and non-volatile, with a melting point of approximately 730 °C. It is an inorganic ionic compound composed of calcium cations and bromide anions. Primarily used as a high-density brine component in oil and gas well drilling and completion fluids, it also serves as a source of bromide ions in the synthesis of other brominated compounds, including pharmaceutical intermediates and flame retardants. Its principal application areas include petroleum extraction, water treatment chemicals, and as a precursor in the production of silver bromide for photographic materials.
Calcium bromide (CaBr2) is used as a developer for photographic film and paper and as adehydrating agent (drying agent), food preservative, and fire retardant.
