Magnesium bromide is a white to off-white, hygroscopic crystalline solid at room temperature, typically encountered as a dihydrate (MgBr₂·6H₂O) or anhydrous form; it is odorless, non-volatile, and highly soluble in water and polar organic solvents. It is classified as an inorganic ionic salt and a magnesium halide. Magnesium bromide serves primarily as a catalyst and reagent in organic synthesis—especially in Grignard-type reactions, bromination processes, and as a Lewis acid promoter in cyclization and coupling reactions. Its principal applications are in the production of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals, particularly as an intermediate in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), agrochemicals, and specialty brominated compounds.
Magnesium bromide occurs in sea water, surface and subterranean brines, and salt deposits. It is an electrolyte component in certain dry cells. In medicine, it is a sedative and anticonvulsant for treatment of nervous disorder. It also is used in organic synthesis forming several addition compounds.
