Tween 80

Tween 80 (polysorbate 80) is a viscous, amber to light yellow liquid at room temperature, odorless or with a faint characteristic odor, and non-volatile. It is a nonionic surfactant synthesized from oleic acid and polyethoxylated sorbitan, classified as a polyoxyethylene derivative of a fatty acid ester. Primarily used as an emulsifier, solubilizer, and stabilizer, it serves critical roles in pharmaceutical formulations (e.g., parenteral drug delivery), food products (e.g., ice cream and salad dressings), and personal care items (e.g., cosmetics and topical preparations). Its applications extend to agrochemical formulations—particularly in pesticide emulsifiable concentrates—and to biotechnology processes, including cell culture media supplementation and protein stabilization.

Polysorbate 80 has a faint, characteristic odor and a warm, somewhat bitter taste. It is a mixture of oleate partial estersof sorbitol and sorbitol anhydrides condensed with approximately 20 mole of ethylene oxide (C2H4O) for each mole of sorbitol andits mono- and dianhydrides.
