O ácido esteárico é um ácido graxo saturado de cadeia longa, apresentando-se à temperatura ambiente como um sólido cristalino branco ou levemente amarelado, com odor fraco característico e ponto de fusão entre 69 °C e 70 °C. Quimicamente, classifica-se como um ácido carboxílico alifático, derivado da hidrólise de gorduras e óleos naturais, especialmente de origem vegetal e animal. É amplamente empregado como matéria-prima essencial na síntese de estearatos metálicos, sabões, emulsificantes, lubrificantes e agentes espessantes, desempenhando papel-chave como intermediário orgânico em processos de fabricação de cosméticos, produtos farmacêuticos, plásticos, revestimentos e aditivos para borracha. Suas aplicações industriais concentram-se principalmente nos setores de cuidados pessoais, indústria farmacêutica, produção de polímeros e formulação de tintas e vernizes, onde contribui para a estabilidade, textura e desempenho funcional dos produtos finais.

Pure product appears as white shiny soft small pieces. It is slightly soluble in water, soluble in alcohol, acetone, easily soluble in benzene, chloroform, ether, carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulfide, amyl acetate and toluene.
