Butane Market share- How big is the Butane market?

In 2023–2024, the United States, Russia, and Qatar were the leading exporters of butane (CAS 106-97-8), collectively accounting for over 40% of global exports by value; major importers included India, South Korea, and Japan—key refining and petrochemical hubs reliant on butane for LPG blending and feedstock. Butane trade volumes remained relatively stable year-on-year, though regional import demand shifted modestly toward Asia amid tightening supply from traditional exporters, contributing to elevated butane prices in key Asian markets.

About Butane

Butane is a colorless, highly volatile, flammable gas at ambient temperature and pressure, with a faint petroleum-like odor; it liquefies readily under moderate pressure and has a boiling point of −0.5 °C and a melting point of −138.3 °C. It is a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon (alkane) and one of the lightest C₄ hydrocarbons. Butane serves primarily as a fuel component in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), portable stoves, and cigarette lighters, and as a feedstock for alkylation units in gasoline production. It is also used as a propellant in aerosol products and as a starting material for the production of butadiene, maleic anhydride, and other derivatives employed in synthetic rubber, plastics, and solvent applications.

Butane is the common fuel used in cigarette lighters and also as an aerosol propellant, a calibration gas, a refrigerant, a fuel additive, and a chemical feedstock in the petrochemical industry.
