Methyl propionate is a colorless, volatile liquid with a characteristic fruity odor. It is an aliphatic ester, classified as an organic chemical intermediate. With a boiling point of approximately 79–80 °C and moderate water solubility, it serves primarily as a reactive building block in organic synthesis. Its principal industrial applications include use as an intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals (e.g., herbicides and plant growth regulators), and specialty polymers. It is also employed as a solvent or co-solvent in coatings, inks, and adhesives formulations where rapid evaporation and compatibility with acrylic and cellulose-based resins are required.
Methyl propionate is used as a solvent for cellulose nitrate and lacquers, and as a raw material for the production of paints, varnishes and other chemicals such as methyl methacrylate. Due to its fruity smell and taste, it is also used in fragrances and flavoring.
