I. Price Trends
1. Domestic Prices
- East China Region: Quotations for standard industrial-grade benzoic acid range from RMB 4,900–5,500 per metric ton (MT); some producers offer lower prices due to capacity advantages. High-purity products (≥99.5%) maintain stable quotations at RMB 7,000/MT. Premium pharmaceutical-grade products command significant premiums, with select suppliers quoting RMB 15,000–32,000/MT.
- Wuhan, Hubei Province: Industrial-grade benzoic acid is quoted as high as RMB 8,600/MT, reflecting regional supply-demand imbalance and elevated logistics costs.
- National Average: The average price over the past three months stands at RMB 7,000/MT—the highest level in the past three years—with narrowing price volatility.

2. International Price Comparison
- Premium pharmaceutical-grade benzoic acid (FDA/EP certified) remains largely import-dependent. In 2023, the average import price was USD 2,780/MT (approximately RMB 19,000/MT).

II. Capacity and Supply-Demand Dynamics
1. Production Concentration
- China accounts for over 60% of global benzoic acid capacity. Total national capacity reached 853,000 MT in 2023, with a CR5 (top five producers’ market share) exceeding 96.5%, indicating a highly consolidated oligopolistic structure. East China region contributes 68.3% of national capacity, benefiting from port access and industrial chain synergy, conferring cost advantages.

2. Capacity Utilization
- Completion of environmental technology upgrades has enabled improved capacity utilization among certain producers, potentially leading to modest output growth. However, under the prevailing oligopoly, price volatility remains constrained.

3. Downstream Demand
- Food Preservatives: Account for 38% of total demand; growth has slowed to 2.1% annually, impacted by the “zero-additive” consumer trend and revised GB 2760–2024 food safety standards.
- Pharmaceutical Intermediates: Represent 25% of demand, growing steadily at 6.5% per year.
- Personal Care & Cosmetic Additives: Constitute 15% of demand, expanding at an annual rate of 8.3%.
- Regional Demand: Domestic consumption accounts for over 56% of global sales volume. Key export destinations include India, the United States, Turkey, Russia, and Indonesia. Notably, India’s agricultural expansion has driven increased demand for benzoic acid as a pesticide intermediate.

III. Raw Material Costs
1. Toluene Price Volatility
- Toluene—benzoic acid’s primary feedstock—exerts direct influence on production costs. In 2023, domestic toluene averaged RMB 6,820/MT, up 4.7% year-on-year, increasing benzoic acid production costs by approximately 3.2%.

IV. Policy and Regulatory Landscape
1. Environmental Regulations
- Stringent regulations—including EU REACH and U.S. FDA requirements—impose higher thresholds for impurity profiles, carbon footprint, and traceability, raising import barriers and compelling domestic producers to adopt greener manufacturing technologies.

2. Food Safety Regulations
- The revised GB 2760–2024 standard further restricts maximum permitted levels of sodium benzoate in beverages and condiments. This exerts short-term downward pressure on food-sector demand but drives long-term industry transformation toward higher purity and enhanced safety.

V. Technological Advancements
1. Bio-synthetic Route
- Bio-synthetic production remains at the pilot-scale stage. Should it mature, this pathway may serve as a complementary route—and potentially disrupt current cost structures—by reducing dependence on fossil-derived feedstocks.

VI. Market Dynamics and Competitive Landscape
1. Import Dependence for High-End Products
- Domestic producers still lack sufficient technical capability in pharmaceutical-grade benzoic acid meeting FDA/EP certification requirements, resulting in relatively high import volumes.

2. Environmental Compliance Pressure
- Tightening environmental enforcement is escalating compliance costs, placing small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) at heightened risk of market exit.

3. Trade Frictions
- Tariff barriers may impact export markets; close monitoring of emerging markets—including India and Southeast Asia—is advised.

4. Competitive Structure
- Intense domestic competition prevails, with industry leaders dominating via scale and technological advantages. Accelerating industry consolidation will likely further elevate market concentration, increasing SME attrition risk.

Analytical Assessment
1. Short-Term Price Outlook
- In the near term, benzoic acid pricing will remain subject to volatility driven by toluene price fluctuations and supply-demand fundamentals—likely sustaining a high-level, range-bound pattern.

2. Long-Term Price Outlook
- Over the longer horizon, continued environmental technology adoption and incremental capacity release may gradually ease pricing pressures, bringing prices back toward rational equilibrium levels—though premium segments (e.g., pharmaceutical grade) are expected to retain elevated pricing power.

3. Supply-Demand Structure
- On the supply side, the entrenched oligopolistic structure ensures stability; rising capacity utilization will alleviate prior supply tightness. On the demand side, robust growth in pharmaceutical and personal care applications will continue supporting sustained market development.

Forecast
1. Price Forecast
- Over the next 12 months, industrial-grade benzoic acid prices are projected to oscillate within RMB 5,000–6,000/MT; high-purity products (≥99.5%) are expected to hold steady near RMB 7,000/MT; and premium pharmaceutical-grade products will sustain high-price positioning.

2. Output Forecast
- Domestic benzoic acid production is forecast to grow by 5–8% annually over the next year, meeting rising domestic demand while expanding export volumes.

3. Industry Trends
