Benzoic acid

Benzoic acid is a white crystalline solid with a faint, pleasant odor and moderate volatility; it melts at 122 °C and sublimes readily at atmospheric pressure. It is an aromatic carboxylic acid and a fundamental organic chemical intermediate. Industrially, it serves primarily as a precursor to benzoyl chloride, plasticizers (e.g., glycol esters), and caprolactam, and is used in the synthesis of dyes, peroxides, and pharmaceuticals. Its applications span food preservation (as sodium benzoate), agrochemicals, coatings, and polymer additives—particularly in polyester resins and alkyd formulations.
