Coal tar is a viscous, black, homogeneous liquid with a characteristic aromatic odor; it is non-volatile at ambient temperatures and exhibits no sharp melting or boiling point due to its complex, multicomponent nature. It is classified as a complex mixture of aromatic hydrocarbons, heterocyclic compounds, and phenolic derivatives derived from the high-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal. Industrially, coal tar serves as a key source of aromatic intermediates—including benzene, toluene, xylene, naphthalene, anthracene, and phenol—for synthesis of dyes, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and polymer precursors. Its distillates and fractions are widely used in the production of creosote (for wood preservation), pitch (for electrodes and roofing), and specialty coatings and sealants.
