Germany, the United States, and China are the leading exporters of ferrous sulfate, collectively accounting for over 40% of global export value in 2023–2024, while India, Brazil, and Turkey represent the largest importers, driven by demand from fertilizer and water treatment sectors. Import volumes into Southeast Asia and Latin America have risen steadily since 2022, coinciding with moderate upward pressure on ferrous sulfate prices amid tightening environmental regulations on domestic production in several key exporting regions.
Ferrous sulfate (CAS 7720-78-7) is an inorganic salt that commonly appears as blue-green crystalline solid (heptahydrate form) or as a white to yellowish-gray powder (anhydrous or monohydrate forms); it is odorless, non-volatile, and decomposes before melting (dehydration begins around 64 °C for the heptahydrate). It is classified as a transition metal sulfate and a reducing agent. Industrially, it serves as a precursor in the production of iron-based pigments (e.g., iron oxide blacks and umbers), ferric sulfate coagulants for water treatment, and magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. Its primary application areas include water and wastewater treatment, pigment manufacturing, agricultural micronutrient formulations, and as a raw material in pharmaceutical iron supplements and certain catalyst syntheses.
Nutritional supplements (iron enhancer); color former of fruit and vegetable; for example, the salted product used together with dried alum in eggplant can form stable complex salt with its pigment to prevent the discoloration caused by organic acids. However, it should be noted, for example, it will turn into black ink upon excess amount of iron. When the amount of alum is high, the meat of the pickled eggplant meat will become excessively solid. Formulation example: long eggplant 300 kg; edible salt 40kg; ferrous sulfate 100g; dried alum 500g. It can still be used as the color forming agent of black beans, sugar boiled beans and kelp. Food containing tannins, in order to avoid of causing blackening, should not be used. It can also be used for sterilization, deodorization and very weakly bactericidal.Legumes contained cryptochromic pigment is colorless upon reduction state while being oxidized into black upon oxidation in alkaline condition. Taking advantage of the reduction property of ferrous sulfate can achieve the purpose of color protection with the usage amount of 0.02% to 0.03%.If is used for the manufacturing of iron salt, iron oxide pigments, mordant, purifying agent, preservatives, disinfectants and medicine for anti-anemia drugs
Greenish or yellow-brown crystals orgranules; odorless. Soluble in water with salinetaste; insoluble in alcohol. hygroscopic.
