Sodium sulfite is a white, crystalline solid, typically odorless and non-volatile, with a melting point of approximately 500 °C (decomposes before boiling). It is an inorganic salt and reducing agent, composed of sodium cations and the sulfite anion (SO₃²⁻). It is widely used as a preservative and antioxidant in food and beverage processing, and as a dechlorinating agent in water treatment. In industrial chemistry, it serves as a key intermediate in the production of dyes, pigments, and sulfur-containing compounds, and finds application in pulp and paper manufacturing, photographic developing solutions, and textile bleaching.
