Methyl methacrylate (CAS 80-62-6) is a clear, volatile, colorless liquid with a characteristic sharp, fruity odor. It is an α,β-unsaturated ester and a reactive monomer belonging to the class of organic acrylic compounds. Its boiling point is approximately 101 °C, and it polymerizes readily under thermal or catalytic initiation. Methyl methacrylate is primarily used as a monomer in the production of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), a transparent thermoplastic widely employed in signage, lighting fixtures, automotive components, and medical devices. It also serves as a comonomer in acrylic copolymers for coatings, adhesives, textiles, and impact-modified plastics.
