Acrylic acid is a clear, colorless liquid with a sharp, acrid, pungent odor and moderate volatility. It is an unsaturated carboxylic acid (prop-2-enoic acid), classified as a reactive organic chemical intermediate. With a melting point of 13 °C and boiling point of 141 °C, it readily polymerizes and is commonly handled as an inhibitor-stabilized liquid. Its primary industrial use is as a monomer in the production of polyacrylic acid and acrylic esters—key building blocks for superabsorbent polymers, water-treatment chemicals, dispersants, and thickening agents. Major application areas include personal care products, detergents, coatings, adhesives, and oilfield chemicals.
