حمض الفوماريك هو مركب عضوي كربوكسيلي غير مشبع يُصنَّف على أنه حمض ديكربوكسيلي أليفاتي، ويظهر على هيئة بلورات بيضاء أو مسحوق بلوري ناعم ذو رائحة خفيفة وطعم حامض، وله نقطة انصهار مرتفعة تبلغ حوالي 287 درجة مئوية مع انحلال جيد في الماء والكحول. يتميز بثبات حراري وكيميائي ملحوظ مقارنةً بإيزومره الجيومتري المالئيك، ما يجعله مناسبًا للاستخدام في ظروف التصنيع الصناعي الصعبة. يُستخدم بشكل رئيسي كمركب وسيط في تصنيع الراتنجات البوليمرية غير المشبعة، وكمثبت للون في صناعة الأغذية، وكذلك في إنتاج مواد التحكم في الحموضة ومواد التخليل. كما يدخل في تركيب بعض المستحضرات الصيدلانية والفيتامينات مثل فيتامين B12، فضلاً عن تطبيقاته في قطاعات الأدوية، المواد الغذائية، والطلاءات الصناعية.
