About Sorbitan monostearate

Sorbitan monostearate (CAS 1338-41-6) is a white to off-white, waxy solid at room temperature, typically odorless and non-volatile, with a melting point ranging from 50–60 °C. It is a nonionic surfactant and ester derivative, classified as an organic compound formed by the esterification of sorbitol with stearic acid. Primarily used as an emulsifier, stabilizer, and dispersing agent, it serves as a key functional additive in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic formulations. Its main industrial applications include emulsion stabilization in margarines and shortenings, tablet binding and coating in pharmaceuticals, and pigment dispersion in cosmetics and personal care products.

sorbitan stearate is an emulsifier for water-in-oil creams and lotions, and a solubilizer of essential oils in water. It results from the reaction of stearic acid with sorbitol and is, therefore, synthetically produced from naturally derived materials.
