China and India are the leading exporters of Sclareol, accounting for the majority of global shipments, while the United States, Germany, and France represent the largest importers. These importing countries primarily source Sclareol for fragrance synthesis and pharmaceutical applications, with Sclareol prices showing moderate sensitivity to supply concentration from Asia. Exports from China have remained dominant and stable over the past three years, while Indian exports have expanded incrementally, reflecting growing production capacity amid steady demand in Western markets.
Sclareol is a white to off-white crystalline solid with a mild, woody-amber odor and low volatility; it melts between 87–90 °C and is sparingly soluble in water but readily soluble in common organic solvents. It is a diterpenoid alcohol, classified as a natural product-derived organic chemical and a bicyclic sesquiterpene analog. Primarily isolated from clary sage (*Salvia sclarea*) or produced semi-synthetically, sclareol serves as a key intermediate in the synthesis of ambroxide (ambroxan), a high-value fragrance compound. Its principal industrial use is in the fine fragrance sector, where ambroxide—derived via acid-catalyzed cyclization of sclareol—is employed in perfumery for its long-lasting amber, woody, and musky olfactory properties.
(1) It is mainly used for the synthesis of ambergris-amber fragrance, and more suitable for perfume and essence when utilizing its aroma-retaining ability for blending.(2) It is also used for flavor, spices, cigarettes, cosmetics, health food, food additives.
