Sodium benzoate

Sodium benzoate is a white, crystalline, odorless solid that is highly soluble in water and non-volatile under ambient conditions; it decomposes before melting, with decomposition typically beginning above 300 °C. It is the sodium salt of benzoic acid and is classified as an aromatic organic compound and preservative. Its primary industrial use is as a food, beverage, and cosmetic preservative due to its antimicrobial activity against yeasts, molds, and bacteria. It is also employed as a corrosion inhibitor in automotive coolants and as a stabilizer in pharmaceutical formulations. Additionally, it serves as a precursor or intermediate in the synthesis of certain dyes, flavor compounds, and plasticizers.
