Magnesium sulfate Market Analysis

Magnesium Sulfate: Recent Commodity Market Intelligence, Analysis, and Forecast

I. Market Intelligence

1. Price Trends
- National Average Price: As of June 4, 2026, the national average price for premium-grade magnesium sulfate stands at RMB 900 per ton, while industrial-grade (98% purity) magnesium sulfate is priced at RMB 895 per ton.
- Regional Price Variation: Prices vary across regions—for example, anhydrous magnesium sulfate (98% purity) in Shandong Province is priced at RMB 2,600 per ton, and monohydrate magnesium sulfate (first-grade) at RMB 2,025 per ton.
- Price Volatility: Overall, magnesium sulfate prices have exhibited a fluctuating upward trend in recent years, influenced by supply-demand dynamics, international market prices, and production costs.

2. Supply-Demand Situation
- Production and Demand Volume: As of 2024, China’s magnesium sulfate output reached 3.0543 million tons, with domestic demand totaling 1.875 million tons. Export volume significantly exceeds import volume, indicating ample domestic production capacity and strong competitiveness in global markets.
- Application Fields: Magnesium sulfate is widely utilized across pharmaceuticals, food, chemical, and agricultural sectors. In pharmaceuticals, demand for high-purity, high-performance excipients continues to rise; in the food sector, health-conscious consumption trends drive sustained growth in food-grade magnesium sulfate demand; in chemicals, magnesium sulfate serves increasingly as a catalyst and reaction medium; and in agriculture, its application as a plant growth promoter and soil conditioner is expanding steadily.

3. Market Competition Landscape
- Corporate Competition: The magnesium sulfate industry exhibits a dual trend of diversification and consolidation. Enterprises with technological and market advantages are increasingly prominent, leading to gradually rising industry concentration. For instance, Luvii Pharmaceutical Group, Shandong Jincheng Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd., and Jiangsu Jiujiuma Technology Co., Ltd. dominate the food-grade magnesium sulfate market.
- Regional Competition: Enterprises from different regions demonstrate varying competitive strengths in the magnesium sulfate market. For example, Shandong Province holds a distinct advantage in magnesium sulfate production, thanks to abundant magnesium resources and mature manufacturing expertise.

II. Analysis and Assessment

1. Price Trend Analysis
- Short-Term Fluctuation: Near-term magnesium sulfate prices may experience minor volatility due to supply-demand imbalances, raw material costs, and international price fluctuations. However, given sufficient domestic production capacity and robust export volumes, substantial price increases remain unlikely.
- Long-Term Trend: With the growing popularity of health-conscious consumption and continuous expansion of functional foods and dietary supplement markets, demand for food-grade magnesium sulfate is expected to sustain growth. Concurrently, demand from pharmaceutical, chemical, and agricultural sectors will also increase steadily. Thus, magnesium sulfate prices are projected to exhibit a stable, long-term upward trajectory.

2. Supply-Demand Analysis
- Supply-Side: Numerous domestic magnesium sulfate producers operate with ample capacity. Advancements in production technology and economies of scale have reduced unit production costs, further strengthening overall supply capability.
- Demand-Side: Demand for magnesium sulfate continues to grow across multiple end-use sectors. Particularly in pharmaceuticals and food, consumer preferences for safe, healthy, and high-efficacy products are driving increased demand for high-quality magnesium sulfate. Meanwhile, agricultural applications—such as fertilizer and soil amendment—are also broadening gradually.

3. Competitive Landscape Analysis
- Corporate Competition: Industry competition is poised to intensify. Enterprises must continuously enhance R&D capabilities, improve product quality, reduce production costs, and strengthen market competitiveness. Simultaneously, proactive market expansion and brand-building efforts will be critical to achieving differentiation and leadership.
- Regional Competition: Regional enterprises will continue competing for market share. Firms possessing resource advantages, technological superiority, and market access will command larger shares. Additionally, emerging regional players may gain prominence as local economies develop and industrial structures upgrade.

III. Forecast

1. Price Forecast
- Short-Term Outlook: Over the near term, magnesium sulfate prices may undergo minor fluctuations driven by supply-demand conditions and raw material cost changes. Overall, however, prices are expected to remain relatively stable.
- Long-Term Outlook: With persistent demand growth and gradual reductions in production costs, magnesium sulfate prices are forecast to maintain a steady, moderate upward trend. Nevertheless, the pace of increase may be tempered by competitive pressures and regulatory policy interventions.

2. Supply-Demand Forecast
- Supply Outlook: Domestic magnesium sulfate production capacity is projected to expand further. Ongoing technological improvements and scaling of production operations will continue enhancing supply capacity.
- Demand Outlook: Demand for magnesium sulfate will continue growing across pharmaceutical, food, chemical, and agricultural applications. Notably, in pharmaceutical and food sectors, rising consumer emphasis on health, safety, and efficacy will sustain demand for high-quality magnesium sulfate.

3. Competitive Landscape Forecast
- Corporate Competition Outlook: Industry rivalry will intensify further. Companies must prioritize technological innovation and R&D investment, elevate product quality and value-added features, and broaden marketing channels and customer bases to enhance brand recognition and market share.
- Regional Competition Outlook: Regional enterprises will persist in vying for dominance. Those endowed with resource endowments, technological edge, and market acumen will capture greater market shares. Moreover, as regional economies advance and industrial upgrading accelerates, new entrants from emerging areas may emerge as significant competitors.

About Magnesium sulfate

Magnesium sulfate is a white, crystalline, odorless solid that is highly soluble in water and non-volatile; the anhydrous form melts at approximately 1124 °C, while the common heptahydrate (Epsom salt) loses water of hydration upon heating. It is an inorganic ionic compound classified as a metal sulfate salt. Magnesium sulfate serves primarily as a source of magnesium ions in industrial processes, including fertilizer formulation, wastewater treatment for phosphate removal, and as a coagulant in textile processing. It is widely used in agrochemicals (as a magnesium nutrient supplement), pharmaceuticals (in topical and parenteral preparations), and in the production of other magnesium compounds such as magnesium oxide and catalysts.

Magnesium sulfate (MgS04) is a colorless crystal with a bitter, saline taste. It is soluble in glycerol and used in fireproofing, textile processes, ceramics, cosmetics, and fertilizers.
