Magnesium sulfate is a white, crystalline, odorless solid that is highly soluble in water and non-volatile; the anhydrous form melts at approximately 1124 °C, while the common heptahydrate (Epsom salt) loses water of hydration upon heating. It is an inorganic ionic compound classified as a metal sulfate salt. Magnesium sulfate serves primarily as a source of magnesium ions in industrial processes, including fertilizer formulation, wastewater treatment for phosphate removal, and as a coagulant in textile processing. It is widely used in agrochemicals (as a magnesium nutrient supplement), pharmaceuticals (in topical and parenteral preparations), and in the production of other magnesium compounds such as magnesium oxide and catalysts.
Magnesium sulfate (MgS04) is a colorless crystal with a bitter, saline taste. It is soluble in glycerol and used in fireproofing, textile processes, ceramics, cosmetics, and fertilizers.
